Prior to taking the lights off the Christmas tree the other night I sat for a while and thought back to my childhood years Christmas's. During the war years things were kind of bleak and toys, gifts etc. were the basic minimum. different story today, however. Anyway, a neighbor and coworker of Dad's named Mr. Jarrett always saw to it that we got invited to the Warwood Vet's kids Christmas party. They were located at the time up on Warwood Avenue between the Landon's and the Mulroy's. Thanks to Mr. Jarrett we got a toy, apples, oranges, nuts but candy was almost nonexistant due to sugar rationing. For a couple of years it really helped out at Christmas. My question - Does anyone remember Mr. Jarrett's first name. He had a son named Bill. Happy New Year to all. Larry.

I remember the Vet’s Christmas events but the time I came around they were on 5th street below Kaiser’s market. Subsequently they moved to 6th and Hazelet.  I remember Mr. Jarrett and the yard next to his house which was open for some games etc. I do remember hiding in that area and shooting sling shots at a guy who lived in one of the newer houses facing Warwood Ave next to where the Rich’s lived (that would be Anita and Albert). He had a garden in his backyard (near the alleyway) and was a bit gruff about us getting in his garden so we used to lop sling shots at him from Mr. Jarrett’s yard.  In retrospect, not something I would have liked Dad to hear about.

Anyway, I do not remember Mr. Jarrett’s first name.  I do remember that he used to ride the 5:30 bus home with Dad and for those of us who used to wander up to the 5th street stop  as a greeting party (I never figured out why he got off on 5th street) would see Mr. Jarrett.  We should chronicle these events —it was such a different time and we would each have a different perspective on growing up in that particular city and at that particular time.

Phil, I think you've got a good idea there. We always seem to be searching for info about our ancestors but don't usually give much thought to recording our own childhoods to pass along to the next generation. As for Mr. Jarret, I only remember the name but not where he lived, etc. I also remember going to the Vets Christmas party that was held in basement of Kaiser's. I also remember using that 5th street bus stop much more frequently than the 6th street one when going to and from school. Odd, huh?

I remember dad getting off of the 5 oclock bus and walking down the alley to meet him somewhere around Millie and Joe 's home.( I can't recall their last name but they lived close to Mrs Valput.)I thought he walked from 5th street because he got off the bus stop w/Mr Jarrett.I cannot recall his first name but I do remember dad addressing Christmas cards to him yearly.Does anyone have Dad's  Christmas card list.Michael is such a good historian,I bet he knows all these things plus being a paperboy he seemed to have access to the news of the neighborhood. The vets was located on 6th and Hazlett when I was growing up ,and I am not aware of a Christmas party but did win a cake once at their lawn fete.I was fortunate to have older sibs buy me little trinkets to go along w/whatever Kris Kringle gave me. Also, highlights from christmas was the package from the d.c. cousins.Smelling, shaking, feeling those wrapped dime store gifts was exciting. ....and lets not forget home made eggno g for new years eve and a shot of manechevitz(?) allotted to all, i think i had my first in the 3-4th grade range.

Received the following from Eileen in response to Christmas Past that I want to share with you. Her last sentence came right to the point  - we had a simple life then. Best regards, Larry.

> dear larry,   i do remember mr. jarrett but never knew he had a first name,  just kiding, of course he had a first name.  i  just remember him as mr. jarrett.   funny you should bring up about warwood vets because I remember coming home with those web like plastic stockings filled with candy and i think that is where we got them.  was that on the same street, 5th, as sams?     we had a quiet new year and it was nice to have 3 days off lindsey and matt are doing well in their new home, matt has put down a wood floor in their rec/office room and painted a br so far.   lindsey always finds things to keep him busy.  matt is such a good guy.  we bought matt a lionel train set - remember dads?  did you get any of them for yourself? having those trains up each year was something. i loved each christmas -   that, and finding where my little pile of gifts were located in the living room. we had a pretty simple life then.  eileen

Hi All, Tom is on the phone right now talking to a relative of Mr. Jarrett. First of all his first name was Newell Jarrett. Tom was talking to Mr. Jarretts daughter-in-law who is 80 years old. She said Mr Jarrets son Bill died when he was 58. Mr Jarret died died when he was 65. He was getting ready to retire. He still lived at 504 Richland Ave. She remembers Mr. Jarrett used to go to Marx toy and they would donate a lot of toys for the vets club. I am writing this and Tom is telling me what to write. Some day I hope he will be able to do this his self. Happy New Year to all. I think u should keep up remembering. Its good for the soul.
